How to achieve to set and achieve your learning goals?
Here are some pointers to set your learning goals:
1.) Brainstorming ( identify a few ,areas in life that you want to improve on) eg. I want to improve my second language, I want to learn how to skate, I want to communicate better with my friends.
Note: Learning need not be based on academic subjects only; it can be related to anything thing in life.
2.) Prioritize your learning needs (ie. give priority to those learning areas that will create more impact and opportunities in your life.) For example, John has identified two learning areas for the month of June. First, he wants to improve his oral presentation skills. Next, he wants to learn how to play a PC based game "Dota". In this case, both areas hold a certain a certain weightage in his learning needs. He must then analysis which of these learning area can impact his life more. A better oral presentation skills which can enhance his communication skills when communicating with people around him? Or to learn how to play "Dota" so that he can relate to his friends who are also playing the game?
In this case, John's primary learning goal may be to improve his oral presentation in June while playing "Dota" can be his secondary learning goal. A set of better oral presentation skills may be more impactful to John as he can not only communicate better with friends but the other people like his parents, teachers and siblings as well.
Note: Playing computer games can be a good form of learning. However, you must always weigh your priorities at all times. In addition, learning can only be effective if you have a varied forms of learning activities.
3.) Identify a list of programmes that cater to the needs of your learning goals. Next, choose not more than three prominant ones (if you have planned to achieve our goals in one month) to take part in. It is important to keep your goal realistic and achieveable.
4.) Create a timeline. It is always important to keep check on the progress.
Note: The timeline created must be something that you are comfortable with. If not, you may create unnecessary stress that may hinder your learning processes)
5.) Review on the activities and programmes that you have taken part in. It is always important to know if you have achieve your goals at the end of the day.
Note: The outcome may not be necessary important. It is the follow-up actions that is crucial in the learning process ie. If you have achieved your goals, you may want to further identified more opportunities to further enhance your learning processes. If not, you may just want to review on the processes and alternatives that you can try in your next attempt to accomplish your goals.
Do not give up!
